Ignition Key
The ignition key is the mechanical part that turns on the vehicle. The ignition key also opens the trunk and doors. Some keys have extra functions such as a panic button trunk release, liftgate release or tailgate release.
The blade of the key could cause problems. A locksmith who is registered with Volvo can give you a new key. They can usually do it without a car.
Some Volvo keys come with special features like keys that are red or restricted. The way the car was delivered to the factory determines what features are available. Dealers can request a service to disable the restricted key function. The dealer can accomplish this for you by using VIDA. You can also accomplish this yourself if you own the software and tools.
These key fobs have a red or orange shell. They can be exchanged between cars, but the key fobs that are specially designed will require their shells removed before they can be used in another vehicle. Keys can be programmed by the dealer or you. Volvo key fobs do not require "virginizing".
Remote Key
The remote key allows you to open the doors and start your vehicle. It also lets you control the locks, and activate/deactivate some functions, like panorama roofs or power windows. The key has a restricted function that blocks motion sensing*. You can buy a key with this feature from a dealer (you need proof of ownership) or a Volvo-certified locksmith. The key that has this feature is marked with either red or orange. The color of the key's release slider matches the color of the blade. Swapping a new key with an old one will not change the functionality.
Follow VIDA's simple instructions to program (add) an additional Remote. It doesn't have to be an "virgin key". Sit in the driver's seat, with the door closed and then press the lock button on the new remote, and the side marker light should blink, indicating that the key has been programmed.
Keyless Entry Key
A single press of the keyless entry button locks the car and arms the alarm, a long press shuts all windows and the panoramic roof*. The key has a small button battery. A Volvo-registered locksmith or dealer can provide you with an entry key that is keyless. They can also program your Volvo keys. You can swap key shells on the key fob, and it will function interchangably.
Key Fob
A key fob is a component of the VOLVO key and has keyless entry as well as lock and unlock functions. It also comes with an alarm button that can trigger the alarm in the vehicle. A key fob also contains buttons that shut your windows as well as the panoramic roof*. The key fob is plastic with silver buttons that matches the color of your car. You can swap this shell between keys, and the function will remain unchanged.
A dealer can cut an additional blade for your key fob. A registered Volvo locksmith can do this, but may require proof of ownership. You can also make copies of blank keys using the emergency blade. However, you will have to program the key via VIDA in order to use it in your vehicle.
